노르웨이의 작곡가 그리그는 자신의 음악이 서정적이어서 극음악에는
적합하지 않다고 생각하였으므로 입센의 환상시극 '페르 귄트'를 작곡
함에 있어 서도 사실 자신이 없었다. 그러나 입센의 위촉을 받아 무대
음악으로 이 곡을 작곡하기 시작하였는데, 그는 31세 때 이 곡을 쓰기
시작하여 다음해 여름에 완성하였는데 그의 명작이 되었다. 이것은 처
음에 피아노 2중주의 형식으로 출판되었다가 후에 오케스트라로 편곡되
었다. 이 극음악은 5곡의 전주곡을 비롯하여 행진곡, 무곡, 독창곡, 합
창곡 등 모두 23곡으로 되어 있다.
그런데 그리그는 후에 이 극음악 중에서 가장 마음에 드는 4곡을 뽑아
제1모음곡으로 하였으며, 그 후에 다시 4곡을 선정하여 제2모음곡으로
만들었다.

너무나 유명한 이 멜로디는 이 극에서 세 번 나타난다. 그 중에서 오케
스트라로 연주되는 것은 제3막에서 뿐이고, 제4, 제5막에서는 소프라노의
독창이 나타난다. 꿈을 그리면서 헤메이던 몽상가 페르 귄트는 기쁨과
슬픔이 얽힌 오랜 여정을 마치고 지친 늙은 몸으로 고향의 오막살이로
돌아오게 된다. 백발이 된 솔베이그의 무릎에 엎드려 그녀의 노래를
들으며 평화스런 죽음을 맞게 되는 것이다.
